The three wise monkeys (Japanese: ??, literally "three monkeys") embody the proverbial principle to "see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil". The three monkeys are Mizaru (??, miru, to see), covering his eyes, who sees no evil; Kikazaru (??, kiku, to hear), covering his ears, who hears no evil; and Iwazaru (??, iu, to speak), covering his mouth, who speaks no evil. And since someone asked for a citation of fact, you can find this information in the ?? "Chinese Analects" (tJapanese title is ?? "Rongo," and uses the same Chinese Characters).
